Montessori at the Homestead offers a unique educational experience that blends authentic Montessori principles with hands-on farm and homesteading activities. Designed to support whole child development, the program provides children with opportunities to learn through meaningful work, outdoor exploration, and real-world experiences that foster independence, responsibility, and confidence.
Located on a working homestead, Montessori at the Homestead serves as a living classroom where children engage with nature, animals, gardens, and practical life activities every day. Students participate in child-led learning using Montessori materials while also taking part in farm responsibilities such as gathering eggs, caring for animals, watering gardens, and maintaining the homestead environment. These experiences help children develop problem-solving skills, empathy, leadership, and a strong connection to the natural world.
The program emphasizes the Montessori philosophy of following the child’s interests and nurturing curiosity through hands-on discovery. Farm life is integrated into the curriculum through activities involving botany, zoology, gardening, animal stewardship, food preparation, and environmental care. Students learn valuable life skills while gaining a deeper understanding of how people, animals, and ecosystems work together.
Montessori at the Homestead offers programs for children ages 5–12, including seasonal learning opportunities and immersive summer experiences. Learners participate in activities such as pony care, farm-to-table cooking, herbal studies, gardening projects, outdoor exploration, and homesteading skills. The farm environment encourages children to take ownership of their learning while building confidence through purposeful work and meaningful contributions.
Led by experienced Montessori educator Rachell Ashby, the program is dedicated to preserving each child’s natural love of learning while fostering concentration, independence, and personal growth. By combining Montessori education with authentic agricultural experiences, Montessori at the Homestead creates a rich learning environment where children can thrive academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.
As an approved Children’s First Education Fund provider, Montessori at the Homestead offers families an innovative educational option that nurtures capable, curious, and compassionate learners through the power of nature-based education.
