OpenEd offers a flexible, tuition-free approach to education at home, helping families create personalized learning experiences that fit their children’s needs, interests, and schedules. Through partnerships with public and charter schools, OpenEd provides access to educational resources, ongoing guidance, and a supportive community for families pursuing home-centered learning.
Available in states including Utah, Nevada, Texas, Oregon, Washington, Kansas, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Wyoming, OpenEd gives eligible families opportunities to build an educational experience that works for them. Students enroll through a participating school partner, and families receive guidance throughout the enrollment process and during their participation in the program.
OpenEd provides a range of free resources to support learning at home. Families can access curriculum and courses through an educational marketplace, receive group tutoring when students need additional help, and participate in clubs that encourage new interests and social connections. Depending on state availability, families may also be able to order approved educational materials directly or receive reimbursement for eligible purchases. Certified teachers offer recommendations and guidance, while additional support is available for families navigating Individualized Education Programs and 504 plans.
The program is designed to give parents flexibility while providing helpful structure and support. Families can choose resources and learning experiences that align with their children’s goals, using as much or as little of the available toolkit as needed. A dedicated Family Success Manager helps parents navigate the program, while a student’s teacher reviews learning logs, monitors progress, and offers recommendations.
To maintain enrollment, families must complete ongoing program requirements, which may include submitting regular learning logs, participating in annual state assessments, and meeting other state-specific expectations. Requirements vary by location.
OpenEd is intended for students who are not enrolled in another public or charter program or a full-time private school. Families interested in getting started can explore availability in their state, attend an information session, or request a free information guide to learn more about enrollment and available resources.
